Required Reading: Between the World and Me

Never underestimate the value of creativity… When friends ask me, “what book do you recommend I read?” My first question is, “what genre or subject do you want to read about?” After we decide what their interested in reading, I make my recommendation. If they have no specific interest, I fall back on the most important and valuable book I’ve read in the past two years. “Between the World and Me” by Ta-Nehisi Coates is that book. Shorter than most profound texts at only 176 pages, Ta-Nehisi uses his prose to pack more insight, knowledge, and priceless jewels on the religion known as white supremacy, and the collective disinformation known as American history.

My mind was a swarm of bees while reading this book, at one point I thought it would be best to put it down. “Why make yourself sad?” I asked myself. That fleeting thought lasted as long as particles of light making its way across a football field. Coates is the most important writer since James Baldwin. And this book should be required reading for all Americans. Check it out, if you’re into that kinda thing.
